With CCD and CMOS chips as photographic mediums, what normally is expressed in film as a nearly continuous range of color and tonality is typically reduced to 256 levels of brightness for each of three color channels. Thus, though digital photography brings with it an amazing degree of flexibility, we begin with much less information than we would have had we used film. We must therefore apply a different set of techniques to get the best out of our cameras. This website is aimed at providing technical information in a no-nonsense manner to amateur photographers who wish to maximize their results in the age of digital photography. Of special interest to me are the differences between perception and the photographic image and how to make the photographic image more representative of perception using both traditional and non-traditional methods.

Apply more than one custom tone curve to your Nikon D300, D300s, D3000, D3100, D5000, D700, D200, D80, D90, D100, D70(s), D50, D40, D40x, and the new D7000 images!

Until now, one of the limitations of custom tone curves was that you could only apply the curve that was loaded in your camera when you took the photograph. Peter Dove and Iliah Borg just recently created a program called Curve Surgery that allows you to apply additional custom tone curves to your images. Check it out!

Why the 3:2 aspect ratio of 35mm film is not simply an arbitrary standard

Recently, I came to the realization that the 3:2 aspect ratio of 35mm film may not merely be an arbitrary ratio. Read about how Leica and Henri Cartier-Bresson fit into this discovery.

Landscape Photography

Of all the places I've been in the world, few compare in beauty to California's Central Coast. In between my studies at the Naval Postgraduate School, I have been photographing the lush area around Carmel and Big Sur. In many of my photographs, I use a technique whereby I blend several exposures of the same scene. Take a look at my gallery.
